Video: How to Skin your Deer
SKINNING
When skinning a deer it can either be hung head up or
head down. I now skin mine head down. But if head up then begin by
making a circular cut around the deer's neck. Connect this cut with the
cut made in the stomach during field dressing. Remove the hide by
grasping the skin and pulling down hard with both hands. Use your knife
carefully when freeing the hide from the carcass to avoid cutting the
skin. If the flesh begins to pull off with the skin, stop pulling and
try again after cutting the flesh back with the knife.
NOTE: If the cape is to be saved, you can cut the middle and rear
portion of the hide free by starting skinning just behind the shoulder
and working down from there.
When you have the hide down around the shoulders you
will have to cut off the front legs with a hacksaw just above what you
would think is the deer's knees. Then on the inside of the deer's legs
cut toward the chest and connect this cut with the one made up through
the chest and abdomen during gutting. After you work the hide free
around the front legs with a knife. You can continue to work the hide
down the deer's back towards its feet and tail.
Once you get the hide down around the deer's tail, simply cut the tail
off with a knife. Let me say this again. When you are pulling and
cutting the hide from the deer and you can see that the hide is now
coming off of the tail, you can now simply cut the tail free. This cut
you understand is not through hide but only through the tailbone itself
because you have pulled the hide down far enough so that it exposes the
tailbone under the hide. That's a long explanation for something simple
just so you will not get confused. Continue until you get the hide down
around the deer's tarsal glands (the dark patches on the inside of the
hind legs) then take a saw and cut through the leg just above the tarsal
gland.
By now you are tired from unpacking, driving, getting up early and
dragging the deer out of the woods, skinning and gutting. But you are
not finished yet. You must still store the meat for butchering. I will
not go into great detail at least not today but this is how I do it. I
first cut out the backstrap and tenderloins out and place in an ice
chest. Then I cut the front legs free (no bones to cut) and place them
in an ice chest. Then I cut the back hindquarters free with a knife. You
can works a hindquarter free with just a knife if you work your way to
the ball and socket joint that holds the hindquarters to the hips. Just
work the point into this joint and work around the ball.
Once both tendons are cut the hindquarter will be free. Place any other
meat such as ribs and neck into the icechest. Now place a bunch of ice
in the icechest with the meat. I am now totally exhausted from all the
work. So I am in no mood to begin butchering the deer. So I usually wait
a couple of days before I begin butchering.

244-Inch Buck Could be a New Record Bowkill in Wisconsin
A giant nontypical buck — that has been reportedly gross-scored 244 inches — could be a new record in Wisconsin.
The photo of this buck and hunter is making the email rounds today. It was posted on the Whale Tales website; that’s an archery retailer in Waukesha County outside of Milwaukee.

Food plots can be key to deer hunting
Food
plots can be a key ingredient to improving one’s deer hunting recipe.
Not only are they more nutritional, but they are also much more
productive than feeders dispensing corn, according to wildlife
biologists with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Carefully
designed and crafted food plots provide much more than just deer food.
They may actually increase your chances of successfully harvesting a
deer.
Cover is an additional needed ingredient, said Ralph Meeker, AGFC’s assistant deer program coordinator.
He
explained that deer much prefer situations that have two elements –
food and cover. “Deer spend a great deal of time eating and hiding from
predators. When these two key elements are provided in close proximity
that’s when you get the most ‘bang’ for your buck,” Meeker says.
“Providing this cover may be as simple as developing the edges that
surround your food plot in order to provide for edge habitat. That’s the
transitional area of brush and grass that differentiates the mature
timber from open spaces such as fields or food plots,” he added.
The
usual pattern for deer is to cautiously move from the woods to find
things to eat in the food plots. If the plot is ringed with an
assortment of bushes and shrubs, this helps the deer to stay out of
sight from assorted threatening elements, including two-legged types.
With
a large food plot, Meeker said, a suggestion is to leave or create an
island in the middle of the plot. This island can be a tree or two left
when plowing for the food plot, or it can be some bushes left or planted
in the middle of the food plot. This island can encourage deer to feed
across the plot and to the cover of the island.
Persons
wanting to create food plots can contact private land biologists of the
AGFC for suggestions and technical information, including on-site
visits. There is no cost for these services. Phone 800-364-4263 to
connect with a private land biologist. Private lands biologists also
have a network of partner agencies and professionals including
foresters, soil conservationists, grazing specialists, and fisheries
biologists, that can help with food plots and other conservation
practices on private lands.
Current Arkansas deer harvest now available online
LITTLE
ROCK –Deer hunters interested in studying the state’s deer harvest can
now get real-time data on the season. Hunters can check the deer harvest
numbers at https://dev.ark.org/gamecheck/reports.php.
The
information is available as a result of the agency’s use of the online
and telephone checking system for deer. In addition to ease of use,
faster data processing and real-time data reporting, the new process has
enabled the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to analyze the deer
harvest by date. According to the AGFC’s Deer Program Coordinator Cory
Gray, the information will allow the agency to chart trends during the
season. “It also will provide valuable details about the effects of
season structure on harvest,”
Gray
said. Gray said the information hunters are providing is invaluable to
the agency. “It is critical that hunters provide us accurate data and
give us all of the information requested,” he explained.
To
provide the information over a cell phone, hunters must call from an
area where a cell phone signal is strongest. “Hunters have 24 hours to
check their game, so we’re asking people using a cell phone to go to a
location with a signal stronger than one bar. Hunters need a good signal
so their information comes through as strong as possible on the
system,” Gray says. “It’s not going to work if you don’t have the signal
strength,” he added.
As of right now, checking deer can be done in one of three ways, the call to 866-305-0808 or online atwww.agfc.com. There’s also iPhone and Android AGFC applications that are available.
When
you’ve finished checking your game, you’ll be given a four-digit check
number that must be recorded on the license. So make sure you have a pen
ready. –

Which AR-15 to Buy
All right, after reading the 1000 th “I just found this site, and my
friend has a Vulcan AR 15 for sale, is it a good deal” thread, I though
about putting this together for the newbie. This is a compilation of a
lot of the stuff I have learned from spending way too much time around
here. Its also a lot of stuff I wish I had known before I started
putting money into rifles. I am far from an expert, so if you see errors
(in facts not opinions) please let me know. I also could use help with
details on the different brands and what they offer. Please share your
knowledge.
In a nutshell, "mil-spec" rifles are made based on a "Technical Data Package" which is a closely guarded secret document which belongs to Colt. This gives the specification for every part on a rifle. The TDP not only tells the specifications of the part- dimensions, materials to be used, etc, it also specifies how parts are to be tested.
For example, the standard for barrels, is that every one must fire a high pressure round, and then be MPI inspected. There are specs for testing of every part in the rifle. The spec might be for individual or batch testing. Colt and FN must have metallurgists who test samples of every batch of barrels, for example to confirm that the metal the barrel is made of is what the supplier said it is. This is true of bolts, springs, pins, etc. Every part has a specification for how it is to be tested, and all testing is documented. For example, the Crane article says that a lower receiver is inspected for 102 different points. This is all overseen by government inspectors as well, who can step in and say- "Lets see this particular rifle tested in this way" at random.
What does all this do for you? Well, lets say that "company J" forges upper receivers. One day they make 1000 upper receivers, and happen to ship 500 to FN or Colt for military rifles, and another 500 to Vulcan (just as an example). The milspec may require that a certain number of the receivers are subjected to destructive testing to confirm that the mix in the alloy was done correctly for the batch. While doing this, they find that a mistake was made, and the whole lot is rejected. Meanwhile, Vulcan- the official supplier to the Speshul Forces is busy building uppers out of their receivers. They can also advertise that they bought their uppers from the same company which supplies the military. The only difference is the quality assurance which takes place after manufacture.

What does all this come down to?
You have to decide what you want and how much you want to pay for it. Can you buy a Colt and get a lemon? Yes. Can you buy an M&A kit and get a great rifle? Yes. When you pay more for parts you are paying more for something which is MORE LIKELY to perform well. The extra you pay for the Colt makes it LESS LIKELY that you will have a problem, but does not make it impossible. The smaller amount you pay for one of the cheaper uppers means less quality control and makes it MORE LIKELY that you will have problems. If you are a contractor or SWAT cop going into dangerous places, you should spend as much as you can afford because the price of a part failure can be your life. In addition, when you pay more for higher quality raw materials, you will likely get a longer life from them. If you are intending to attend courses which teach you to shoot (we all should), or to compete in three gun competition or you like to put many hundreds of rounds downrange when you go out, you will likely start to stress your rifle more and you will probably see the benefit from the extra $ you put into your gear. To me, putting more money into quality components is getting easier and easier. When you consider that 1K of Wolf ammo is going for over $200 these days, putting an extra $200 into a rifle which will probably last the rest of your lifetime is a no brainer. That said, we don't all need Colts. Most of the companies above provide very good products which will meet the needs of most users. Buying a decent product and then spending a lot of time using it is the best way to find out if it is reliable, as well as being ready to use it if the need ever arises.

Will The United States Strike Syria?
US interventions post-Cold War |
The proposed US military strike on Syria would be the latest in a long list of overseas intrusions. While most Syrians get poorer with every day of war, Aleppo's main gun seller Abu Mohammad is doing just fine by selling firearms, including rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and even swords."War is great business," said the northern city's only gun shop owner, as he laid several hand grenades out on a counter."I wanted to help the rebels because they had no arms or ammunition," the 39-year-old told AFP, adding that he makes an astonishing 50,000 Syrian pounds ($370) a day. Abu Mohammad opened his gun store in the rebel-held neighborhood of Fardos earlier this year after a leg injury cut short a nine-month stint battling alongside the Free Syrian Army.Several weapons are exhibited on the shop walls, including 9mm guns and AK-47 assault rifles, one of them silver-plated."They're made in Iraq and Russia, and prices range from $1,500 to $2,000, depending on the quality," said Abu Mohammad's 20-year-old son, a rebel fighter who lends a hand in the store."We also have military uniforms. |

Government Still Down for the Count
Barack Obama and congressional Republican leaders are going to try to resolve their fiscal impasse.
On Friday, Mr Obama met Senate Republicans at the White House and spoke with House of Representatives speaker John Boehner by phone to negotiate on a way to get federal workers back to work.
While there have still been no specific details of what was discussed, both sides have expressed optimism on TV news shows

Government Shut Down
Democrats and Republicans were unable to resolve their differences over Obamacare and now the government is shut down.
And at a time when the economy's finally showing signs of life, that could be troubling.
Shutdowns don't come
cheap. Federal agencies have to use up time, energy and resources to
plan for one. Shutting down and then reopening the government also costs
money. According to the Congressional Research Service, the two previous
shutdowns -- in late 1995 and early 1996 -- cost the country $1.4
billion. But what will the shutdown mean for you? Will your daily life be affected?
10. Vacation all I ever wanted: Need to get away? Well, you can't. At
least not to national parks. Or to national zoos. Or to national
museums. They'll be closed. That's 368 National Park Service sites
closed, millions of visitors turned away.
Were you thinking more
along the lines of a trip to France? If you don't already have a
passport, you might have to bid that adieu -- you might not get your
blue book in time. The last time the government threw a hissy fit,
200,000 applications for passports went unprocessed. Tourism and airline
revenues reeled.
But according to the
State Department's current shutdown plan, offices will remain open
because they generate enough in fees to support their operation. Any
offices located in a federal building affected by the shutdown, however,
may not be able to open.
9. Holiday. Celebrate:
Don't go to work if you're a federal employee. You're on furlough.
(Offer not valid for workers in "critical services," such as air traffic
controllers, hazardous waste handlers and food inspectors.)
Do take some time to
celebrate. In previous shutdowns, everyone who stayed home was paid
retroactively after peace returned to Washington.
8. I won't back down:
The men and women in uniform will stay on the job and be paid,
according to legislation approved by Congress in the run-up to the
shutdown.
Scenarios of the shutdown
7. If you drive a car, I'll tax the street:
You may be thinking, "No functioning government, no need to pay taxes."
Think again. The Man would continue to collect taxes. U.S. bonds would
still be issued. And other essential banking functions will go on.
6. Wait a minute, Mr. Postman:
You know that whole "Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of
night" thing? Apparently, the U.S. Postal Service works through
shutdowns as well. Sorry, you won't catch a break from the junk mail.
But hey, you may already be a winner!
5. I want a new drug:
Oh, the irony. The Republicans still want to defund, delay or otherwise
chip away at Obamacare in exchange for funding the government. But the
health care act at the center of this storm would continue its
implementation process during a shutdown. That's because its funds
aren't dependent on the congressional budget process.
4. Pass the ammunition:
Not so fast. A shutdown would affect the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives. Translation: That gun permit you wanted
processed won't happen anytime soon if this goes on for a while.
3. Money (that's what I want):
Well, if you own a small business and needed a loan from the
government, you'll have to wait, depending on how long this lasts. If
you were planning to buy a house and needed a federal loan, you'll have
to wait. If you're a veteran, you might have to make a few trips to the
mailbox before that check arrives.
If you're on Social
Security, however, don't worry -- probably. Social Security payments
were sent during the last shutdown. President Barack Obama's expected to
keep workers on the payroll to process checks. But would there be
enough employees to process new benefits for the newly retired?
2. Anything dirty or dingy or dusty:
Oscar the Grouch is a company of one. No one loves trash. But if you
live in Washington, expect it to pile up if there's a shutdown. There
wouldn't be anyone to collect your garbage. Washington's budget has to
be approved by Congress. No budget for the city = no trash collection.
And, according to The Washington Post, D.C. produces about 500 tons of
garbage each week.
1. I'm proud to be an American:
Perhaps the biggest hit would be to the collective psyche. America is
the largest economy in the world and a beacon for how democracy ought to
work. To watch elected lawmakers engage in a high-stakes staring
contest with no one willing to blink is no way to do business. A recent
CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll found that 51% would blame Republicans
for the shutdown. The United States has operated without a budget since
2009 and has avoided a government shutdown with last-minute deals. It's
been one stomach-turning sequel after another.

Walmart Cuts Ties With Paula Deen
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced that it has ended its relationship with the Southern celebrity chef, part of the continuing fallout in the wake of revelations that she used racial slurs in the past. The world's largest retailer, based in Bentonville, Ark., currently carries a variety of products under her moniker, including food items, cookware and health and wellness products, at all of its 4,000 U.S. namesake stores. The retailer began selling her merchandise several years ago.
"We will not place new orders beyond those already committed," said Dave Tovar, a Wal-Mart spokesman. "We will work with suppliers to address existing inventories and agreements."
Tovar said the retailer is still working through the details with suppliers.
The severed ties with Wal-Mart are the latest blow to Deen's business. Meanwhile, Paula Deen's name is being stripped from four buffet restaurants owned by Caesars. Caesars said Wednesday that its decision to rebrand its restaurants in Joliet, Ill.; Tunica, Miss.; Cherokee, N.C.; and Elizabether, Ind., was a mutual one with Deen.
Last week, the Food Network said that it would not renew the celebrity cook's contract. And on Monday, Smithfield Foods said it was dropping her as a spokeswoman. Smithfield sold Paula Deen-branded hams in addition to featuring her as a spokeswoman.
Meanwhile, the celebrity chef's representatives distributed nine letters supporting Deen from other companies that work with her, as she fights to keep her business empire from crumbling.
Target Corp., which carries Paula Deen-branded products, reiterated Wednesday it was "evaluating the situation."
Deen appeared in a "Today" show interview earlier Wednesday, dissolving into tears and saying that anyone in the audience who's never said anything they've regretted should pick up a rock and throw it at her head.
NSA fears Snowden saw details of China spying.
The National Security Agency is worried that Edward Snowden may have accessed files that reveal how the United States spies on China and other strategic countries, The Washington Post reported Thursday.
An internal review has found that the former NSA contractor "was able to range across hundreds of thousands of pages of documents," the Post wrote, citing an unidentified former official briefed on the issue. But another intelligence official, also unidentified, told the Post that so far it did not appear that Snowden obtained data collected through hacking or other means.
The official said Snowden had "got a lot" but "not even close to the lion's share" of the NSA's intelligence trove. Nonetheless, the official described potential harm to U.S. surveillance efforts as "a concern."
The Post writes:
The possibility that intelligence about foreign targets might be made public has stirred anxiety about the potential to compromise the agency's overseas collection efforts. U.S. officials fear that further revelations could disclose specific intelligence-gathering methods or enable foreign governments to deduce their own vulnerabilities.Snowden has stated publicly he does not plan to publicize technical specifics of the NSA's operations. He has archived encrypted documents with others, the Guardian newspaper has said, and U.S. officials worry they could eventually be out of his control.
The Guardian's Glenn Greenwald told the Daily Beast that "if anything happens" to Snowden, "the stories will inevitably be published."
Snowden leaked the files to the Post and the Guardian.
Separately, Greenwald and other Guardian reporters wrote that documents leaked by Snowden show that Microsoft "collaborated closely with U.S. intelligence services to allow users' communications to be intercepted." The company said it was legally obligated to cooperate.
With Microsoft's help, the NSA evaded encryption to intercept e-mails on Outlook and Hotmail, and Web chats and video calls on Outlook and Skype. It also gained access to SkyDrive, the company's cloud storage service.
The NSA shared the material with the FBI and CIA,the Guardian said. One agency document described the effort as a "team sport.."
The formerly secret files illuminate the workings of the PRISM surveillance operation and reveal the extent of cooperation between big technology companies and the government during the past three years, the Guardian said.
Microsoft responded that it merely follows the law.
Edward Snowden Documents
New top secret documents provided by Edward Snowden allege Microsoft worked with the National Security Agency to get around the tech giant’s own encryption systems and Skype helped the agency collect video calls.
The documents, which were not posted online, allegedly show that Microsoft collaborated with the NSA months before the launch of their Outlook.com portal to make sure the NSA would be able to intercept and read web chats. The company also reportedly helped give the NSA easier access to its cloud storage device called SkyDrive.
In response to the new report, Microsoft again emphasized that the company “only ever compl[ies] with orders about specific accounts or identifiers, and we would not respond to the kind of blanket orders discussed in the press over the past few weeks…”
“To be clear, Microsoft does not provide any government with blanket access to SkyDrive, Outlook.com, Skype or any Microsoft product,” the company said in a statement to ABC News. “We have clear principles which guide the response across our entire company to government demands for customer information for both law enforcement and national security issues. First, we take our commitments to our customers and to compliance with applicable law very seriously, so we provide customer data only in response to legal processes.”
Snowden, a 30-year-old former contractor with the NSA, is believed to be stranded in the transit area of a Moscow airport. While in Hong Kong in mid-June, Snowden revealed himself as the source of a series of reports in The Guardian and other international outlets about the NSA’s vast foreign and domestic surveillance programs. Snowden fled Hong Kong for Moscow in late June for Moscow and has applied for political asylum in nearly two dozen countries. He has been charged in the U.S. with espionage.
Breaking News US to go ahead with F-16 jets delivery to Egypt
The ouster of the first Egyptian elected president,
Mohamed Morsi, and a consequent political unrest nothwithstanding, the
United States has said it will go ahead with the delivery of four F-16
fighter jets to Egypt.
American officials said that the jets are likely to be delivered in August as the US has made no changes its plans so far.
This comes even as the White House has not come up with its clear stand on the ouster of Morsi by the Egyptian army. The US has neither welcomed the removal not has it denounced it as a military coup. It says that it needs time to evaluate the situation.
Washington will have to cut a huge military aid to Cairo if the removal of the Islamist leader is determined to be a military coup.
Subsequently the jet deal will also be affected because the Egyptian military receives the lion's share of the $1.5 billion in annual American assistance to the country.
But officials said there is no change in the US outlook as of now.
"There is no current change in the plan to deliver F-16s to the Egyptian military," an US official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
Asked whether American review of Egyptian political crisis had put the F-16 delivery on hold, the official said: "The delivery remains scheduled as planned."
White House spokesman Jay Carney also said the US has not changed its mind as of now.
"It's our view that we should not in the best interests of the United States make immediate changes to our assistance programmes," Carney said.
The spokesman directed specific questions about the jets to the Defense Department and added that the administration would take its time to consider the implications of removing Morsi from power.
The Pentagon in a statement reiterated what President Barack Obama had said on July 3 about having ordered a review of U.S. assistance to Egypt.
The jets are part of an already agreed bigger order of 20 planes - eight of which were sent to Egypt in January. The final eight are expected to be shipped later this year.
President Obama has been careful not to use the word "coup" in relation to the recent events in Egypt to avoid triggering a legal cut-off of aid.
An Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman has said Morsi is being held in a "safe place" and treated in a "very dignified manner" even as arrest warrants have been issued for the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Badie, and nine senior figures.

Paula Deen
Paula Deen has replaced her lead legal team, the latest fallout from her admission she used racial slurs in the past.
Deen announced last week she had cut ties with her longtime agent who helped make her a Food Network star and start a media and merchandising empire that has largely collapsed.
Grace Speights, an attorney for Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, has been retained as the new lead counsel for Paula Deen Enterprises Inc. and other defendants in an employment discrimination lawsuit, according to Jennifer Costa, a spokeswoman for the Washington-based firm.
The lawsuit was filed by Lisa Jackson, who once worked as a manager at Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House, which Deen co-owns with her brother, Bubba Hiers. Jackson says she was sexually harassed and worked in an environment rife with racial slurs and innuendo.
Asked in a deposition if she had ever used the N-word, Deen replied: "Yes, of course." But she also insisted "it's been a very long time."
According to the Morgan Lewis website, Speights specializes in defending clients in employment discrimination cases and consulting clients on best practices in corporate diversity.
Court documents filed Thursday asked that all future documents in the case be sent to the Morgan Lewis & Bockius Law Firm and to the Weiner, Shearhouse, Weitz, Greenberg and Shawe law firm in Savannah.
The Oliver Maner law firm and the Gillen Withers and Lake firm in Savannah had been representing Deen, Hiers and their businesses.
Patricia Glaser, of the Los Angeles law firm Glaser Weil, told The Associated Press that Deen had also retained that firm as a general counsel and that it would be monitoring the case.
Calls to each of the other law firms were not immediately returned.

Oklahoma Tornado 2013: Storms Tear Across Central U.S.
Officials at two hospitals say they're treating nearly 60 patients, including more than a dozen children, after a massive tornado hit suburban Oklahoma City.
Integris Southwest Medical Center spokeswoman Brooke Cayot said 10 of 37 patients being treated at that facility Monday are listed in critical condition. Twelve are in serious and 15 others are listed in fair or good condition.
Five of the patients are children, including two who came from the Plaza Towers Elementary School, where an Associated Press photographer saw several children being pulled from the rubble. Cayot could not confirm the children's conditions.
Spokesman Scott Coppenbarger says another 20 patients of various ages are being treated at OU Medical Center. He says eight of them are children.
If you or anyone you know has been affected by the tornado in Oklahoma, we want to hear from you about what's happening there. Send your stories, eyewitness accounts, photos, videos, and anything else you want to share. Our Prayers go up for All of you.

What is Jello Made of?
Gelatin
Next time that frat guy offers you a Jell-O shot, consider this: Jell-O's main ingredient, as I'm sure it's easy to imagine given the name, is gelatin. But gelatin, for those who don't know, consists of the collagen extracted from an animal's skin and (mostly) bones. So if you've ever been told Jell-O is made of "horse hooves," you're partially correct (though actual hooves are not used in the production process). And also probably partially nauseous. But if you think it's just Jell-O shots you should be avoiding, you're sadly mistaken … you can find gelatin in everything from Gummy Bears to those marshmallow Peeps you get on Easter Sunday. Now perhaps it seems a wee bit less ridiculous when your vegetarian friends turn down the pastel-colored cuties, because (to you're thinking) they're "animals." Uh, well. Yeah, they are actually."

Conceal Carry For Women
Concealed Carry For Women
Carrying A Concealed Gun
Once you
have made the decision to carry a gun, there is one thing that is not
an option and that is carrying a gun un-holstered. Whether you carry in
your pocket, in a purse or in your belt, your firearm must be holstered
and the trigger covered at all times. Carrying a concealed gun carries
the great responsibility of being safe and trained how to use it.
Concealed
carry for women has some very real challenges to comfortably and safely
carry a concealed gun. Our clothing and our curves cause most of the
challenges to carrying a gun on our person. On the body carrying is
preferred and is the safest and best way for you to carry your gun. It
is on you, within easy reach and the opportunity for someone who you
don't want to get to your gun is extremely limited. Let's start with the
challenges our clothing present for effectively carrying a concealed
gun and then discuss the best options for women to overcome them.
Women
tend to wear more fitting styles and many of the fabrics we love are
thin and sheer. Naturally this can make it difficult to conceal a gun.
Dresses pose an additional set of challenges as the absence of a belt
add to the challenge. Yet, to provide the security we desire, we must
have our gun readily available and accessible to defend ourselves and
yet be hidden from view. Therefore, the gun must be close, accessible
and ready.
The
other key challenge is that most holsters are made for men, with a
woman's curves and physical differences, comfort is compromised with
concealed carry holsters made for a man. A holster made in pink, is not a
guarantee that it was designed for a women's body. The industry has
made some progress in addressing these issues, but finding them is
extremely difficult both online and in gun stores. The Well Armed Woman
has sought out the best options and designed a line of holsters for
women and has made them available.Every woman's lifestyle, needs and of course body's are different and finding holsters that work for you and that are comfortable is an absolute necessity.
Women's Concealed Carry Holster Options
Here are the current options for effective conceal and carry ordered by location on the body:Belt or On The Waist Carry
Belt
carry or on the waist carry, is the preferred and most common form of
concealed carry for women. It is the first and best choice. Although
alternatives are offered here, it is important to know and remember that
alternative methods of carry are just that: alternatives to the
preferred method. The larger
and wider the firearm is, the harder it is to keep concealed. The
heavier it is, the less comfortable it is to carry, a very important
thing to consider when selecting your self defense gun. Not all of these
options require a belt. Some of clips that clip on the waistband
without a belt.
Belt
carry or on the waist carry is the most comfortable on the body form of
concealed carry of a gun for most women. With a properly designed
holster, it also offers a high level of security and easy access to your
gun, should you need it. Belt carry also works with much of women's
clothing styles. Pants of all kinds, skirts, shorts etc. As mentioned
above, most belt holsters are designed for men and one size does not fit
all, especially when curves and wider hips are involved.
The
belt is a key to comfortable and effective on the belt carry. I
recommend you purchase a good sturdy contoured leather belt. These have
the slight U shape when lying flat. The belt must be wide enough to
fully support and distribute the weight of the firearm.
There
are many variations of belt carry and on the waist holsters and your
gun can be belt carried on the outside of the belt or inside.
Outside the belt with clip, belt slots or paddle (OWB Outside The Waist Band)
Carrying
outside the waistband is naturally more comfortable and easier to draw
from than inside the waistband. It also will be cooler in warmer
climates and the gun does not touch your skin. Concealment
outside the waistband requires larger, longer shirts or garments to
effectively hide the gun. In some states it is legal to open carry, in
which you can wear your gun without cover. The concern here is that with
the firearm exposed someone could grab your firearm out of its holster.
A locking holster with a Thumb Break (a strap or mechanism that must be
opened or released to withdraw the firearm) would be necessary to keep
this from happening. Outside the waistband holsters come with clips to clip onto the belt or waistband, with slots for your belt to secure the holster or with a paddle that lays flat on the inside of the pants.
The Annie holster
requires a belt. This holster is specifically designed for a woman's
body. It is model specific so not all models will fit in this holster.
The Magnetic on the waist holster requires no belt and is a great option for slacks and thinner waisted pants and shorts
The Build Your Own
on the waist holster is one that is made specifically for your firearm
and you can choose the leather and thread color to your own taste.
You must wear a jacket, long sweater or vest that you will have on the entire time you are out to carry outside the belt.
Inside the belt with clip (IWB - Inside the Waist Band)
Carrying the firearm with the bulk of the firearm inside the waistband is a very popular form of concealed
carry with women as only the grip or butt needs to be covered and the
firearm is very accessible and easy to draw. Most regular women's shirts
will cover sufficiently and most pants can "stretch" to make the
adjustment necessary to fit the firearm.
The Betty holster is a sleek, low riding in the pants holster made for many firearm models. These have a tuck-able "slot" to tuck your shirt into in-between the clip and the firearm itself.
The Build Your Own in the pants holster is made specifically for your firearm and you can choose the leather and thread color to your own taste.
The
location of where you carry is a personal one. What is comfortable and
easy for you to draw from are the keys. Most common are on the strong
side (the same side as your shooting hand) in the front or towards the
back just off the hip with the handle angled properly
for easy drawing or appendix carry with the gun placed in front,
between your belly button and your hip. There is a tuck-able model that
has a "slot" to tuck your shirt into in-between the clip and the firearm
itself.
This is
practical for women when wearing pants, slacks, or a skirt with strong
waistband or shorts. There are options made in leather, plastic and
nylons.
Other waist area methods are:
Undergarment
Women's Compression Concealment
shorts are a way for women to carry and conceal a handgun when they're
wearing a skirt, slacks, gym shorts, sweat pants, jeans, or dress pants
without a belt. The concealed holster is made from surgical
grade elastic and sewn into a pair of authentic compression shorts and
holds your firearm securely. They feature two holsters offering
ambidextrous concealment and you can also carry spare magazines, or
other important items on the other side.
The sling style Thundewear is made from cotton
and is worn under your garments but over your underwear. The low below
the belly position makes for very good conceal-ability.
Another option is the compression tank top. These "undershirts" have holster pockets on both sides and holds the firearm just under the arm
pit. These are not considered fast draw holsters as depending on the
clothing you are wearing - you will have to get to the firearm to draw
it, this can slow up your draw time considerably.
They are very comfortable and a great option for women to effectively conceal carry in many clothing styles.
Make sure you have read the laws of your state and the permitting requirements prior to carrying your gun in a concealed manner. It is your responsibility to not only understand the concealed carry laws but also understand the seriousness of the responsibility you assume when you choose to concealed carry. As intelligent women, we instinctively know that we need to protect ourselves and that the world we live in, sadly requires us to always be aware of our surroundings and know that there are some very bad people out there that will do us harm. I don't want to dwell on the gruesome, painful realities and statistics of the violent crimes against women, as The Well Armed Women is focused on empowerment. However, in making the decision to concealed carry as a woman it is important to be fully informed. Here are just a few statistics to remind us briefly of the need to protect ourselves, whether our personal plan includes concealed carry of a gun or other methods of self defense.

Top 2 Concealment Handguns
What are the best guns for concealed carry? Sounds like a good question to start an argument.
The truth is there is no perfect gun. Every firearm is a compromise offering certain benefits at the costs of others. Yet, I am frequently asked my opinion on what gun someone should buy, or at least consider, for carrying.
Generally, I try to find out a little more information about the person’s situation and their experience with guns. Sometimes there will be a wild card thrown in, such as a significant known risk from a criminal enterprise or ex-spouse. Almost always, cost is a consideration.
So, with all of these variables, how does one pick which guns are best?
Based on my experience and the collective experience of the shooting community, there are certain guns and brands that I remove from consideration on this due to known reliability problems or high cost.
Some of you are going to hate my choices while others will agree with some or even all of them. Just keep in mind that each person who chooses to carry a gun for self defense has very specific needs. Just because these guns work for me doesn’t mean there aren’t other great choices out there.
Glock 19 – For a great, all-around concealed carry handgun, it is hard to beat the Glock 19. It is compact enough for most people to conceal in an inside-the-waistband (IWB) holster, yet is still large enough to fight with. I’ve always felt well-armed when carrying a 19.
The model 19 is chambered in 9mm and holds 15 rounds in the standard magazine. For an identically sized pistol in .40 S&W, take a look at the Glock 23.
Another option for the Glock fan is the subcompact 26. Also chambered in 9mm, this pistol is more compact than the 19 with a shorter barrel and grip. There are a lot of people who prefer this pistol to the larger 19, but I am not one of them. However, it is still a good choice if you absolutely need to cut the size down.
Springfield XD-S – Springfield Armory’s XD-S line of pistols are great for concealed carry. They are thin, offer reasonable firepower and are just as reliable as most modern polymer pistols. Initially, the XD-S was offered only in .45 ACP, but they were introduced in 9mm this year.
For me, I prefer the 9mm XD-S, but I’m certain that there are a lot of .45 fans who would opt for the bigger bore version. The guns are only 1” wide, which makes them fairly easy for concealed carry.

A Great Turkey Gun - Remington Versa Max
Remington Versa Max
An innovator from its earliest days, Remington introduced its own top recoil managing model with the creation of the Versa Max, a gas-operated 12-gauge reported to reduce the felt recoil down to that of a 20. This classicly styled shotgun boasts beautiful lines and a narrow configuration, but with all the features a turkey hunter could ask for. Remington 700 7mm Mag
The Remington Model 700 series is the all-time best selling line of bolt action sporting rifles in the world. They were an immediate hit when introduced in 1962 and have never looked back. The Model 700 has also become the favored action of many custom rifle builders.
The Model 700 action was designed for ease of manufacture, given the manufacturing technology of the early 1960's, and uses a round action machined from bar stock, a plunger ejector in the bolt face and a sort of circlip in the bolt face that snaps over the rim of a chambered cartridge to extract the fired brass. The bolt face is recessed to enclose the base of the cartridge, which is also surrounded by the chamber end of the barrel and the front receiver ring. The cartridge head is thus circled by three rings of steel, much as with the Weatherby Mark V action, and this fact was not overlooked by the Remington advertising department.
Traditionalists considered these cost cutting innovations "cheap," but the customers responded in droves to the undeniable good looks of the Model 700 ADL and BDL rifles themselves. They were among the best looking hunting rifles ever introduced and the stock design handled recoil very well, which made them pleasant to shoot. The two position safety (back for "safe" and forward for "fire") at the rear of the action is easy to operate; it used to lock the bolt (to prevent inadvertent opening in the field) as well as the trigger, but the former feature has been eliminated. They were also hell for strong and very accurate. An excellent user-adjustable trigger with the exceptionally fast lock time of 3.0 milliseconds complemented the inherent accuracy of the new rifles.
Remington got a leg up on the market because in 1964 Winchester introduced a revised version of their famous Model 70 rifle--really a new action--also designed for easier manufacture, that pleased practically no one. The new Model 70 was actually a good action, but the stock design, barrel bedding, checkering, and so forth left a lot to be desired. Many previous Winchester customers turned to the sharp looking Model 700 from Remington.
The Model 700 has evolved with the market place and today it is available in a bewildering array of models. Some are pretty plain and some are bespoke rifles turned out to special order in Remington's Custom Gun Shop. Model 700 barreled actions are made from carbon or stainless steel, with matte or polished finishes, and stocked in solid walnut, laminated wood, and synthetic materials. They come in a variety of barrel lengths and contours and for a wide range of cartridges. The constant (at least for the centerfire rifles) is the Model 700 action itself, the heart of every Model 700 rifle.

Colt LE6920 AR15
Colt LE6920 chambered in 5.5 NATO is as authentic as a semi auto AR-15 gets. Incorporating a 4-position retractable stock, M4 handguards with dual heat shield, flattop upper with removable carry handle, 1:7-inch twist, chrome lined barrel, and of course, the Colt pony on the receiver. It may look like a basic AR from the outside, but the buttstock is sturdy, and aside from some added optics, I wouldn’t change a thing. You don’t get the fancy free floating quad rail hand guards, but to be honest, I really don’t care. It’s a great rifle to start off with and it wouldn’t take much to upgrade any parts you wish.
